2nd Year Unit of Learning reflection:

This unit was a grouping of work and tasks that I really enjoyed teaching this year, the outcomes and lessons that were learnt along the way really stuck with me and I know that the planning and research around these tasks were why it was successful. The group that were apart of this unit were a mix of 21 very different students but they all have a great gift. They are all very creative and do not mind exploring different themes and working together. The main lessons that I wanted to push in this unit were Art & Advocacy, Collaboration and Choice/Problem solving skills.
This group of students were the group that i chose to do my research paper with, we looked at how they could use their own creative skills/talents to make people aware of injustices and how this is crucial in the world we all inhabit. I really felt that the students made great strides during this work. They collaborated together at the start to answer a series of questions, I did this because I wanted to see if the classroom community could grow and maybe we could promote our inner voice and realise what we say is valid and important. I was interested in the new LC Art curriculum and how there is a specific portion of writing looking at how art can promote lifelong learning through communities and look at art as something that can explore social issues. I was curious to see if Advocacy for change could be brought into the Junior Cycle... were these students mature enough to see the power of art as a vehicle for social change. What came of that research really blew me away, and i am glad this group got to explore this theme together.
A powerful lesson I took from our collaborative seminar in UCC is that not only should we put students in opportunities to collaborate for their own benefit personally/creatively as teachers also we should be very open to collaboration.
The theme of collaboration came through to the final task the second year group were involved in. We unfortunately left school due to the pandemic right in the middle of their CBA 1 project which was going to be the process of creating a lino print.

The work that this group have been uploading online for the online classes has been great, they have been trying very hard to create work in these tough circumstances.

Here is also the school art classroom instagram page I have created to showcase the great work and to keep students up to date on various happenings and google classroom assignments.

I have found great joy through sharing the classroom online and promoting the students work through this platform.
